Bangladesh

Action Five supports the Bengali non-governmental organization Dipshikha (light spark) and the ASSB (Aloha Social Services Bangladesh) through the association „Partnership Shanti-Bangladesh“.

The work’s aim of Shanti, Dipshika and ASSB is to support the population living in poverty in their effort of self help.

As part of an „development from below“ the organizations have set the following main focuses of work:

- further training in the field of agriculture for landless and small farmers.

- forming of savings and loan communities to improve income, eg. chicken farming or sole proprietorship

- improvement of education standards

- health precaution and medical attendance, especially of children and women

- training offers for school and career as supplement to the state-run facilities with the aim of making a contribution to the development of self-confident and independent people

- marriage guidance, family consulting and law advice: Promote the human rights, the women rights as well as give concrete legal advice.

Below we present the eight projects that Dipshikha and ASSB currently is involved in. These projects mainly are situated in the north-west of Bangladesh in the region of Dinjapur.

1. „Holistic Rural Development Birganji“:

This project supports 1,500 strongly disadvantaged small farmer families without financial resources. They receive trainings and small loans to achieve an own income, eg. through starting a small enterprise or agricultural activity. To improve health conditions and decrease the number of diseases pumping wells and toilets are built and health courses are given. To extend the annex palette demonstration fields are set up. In addition chicken farming and reforestation measures are supported.

Project area: 20 villages in the communities of Polashbari, Moricha and Shatagram in the district of Dinjapur.

2. „Holistic Rural Development Birganji II“:

This project supports 1,000 strongly disadvantaged small farmer families without financial resources through various measures: trainings, development of a savings and loan system to encourage small enterprises, improvement of the agricultural application, running of preschools, plantation of trees.

Project area: 20 villages in the communities of Shatagram, Moricha and Shibrampur in the district of Dinjapar.

3. „Holistic Support of Small Farmer Families in Tarash“:

This project supports 1,050 of the poorest families on the basis of individually elaborated development plans. Measures implemented include: constructing a project centre, workshops, development of a savings and loan system to encourage small enterprises, improvement of the agricultural application, installation of pumping wells and toilets, construction of demonstration fields, running of preschools, plantation of trees, reparation of connecting roads between the villages.

Project area: 30 villages in the communities of Deshigram and Madainagar in the district of Sirajganj

4. “Integrated Rural Development Aranagar”:

This project supports 1,200 of the poorest women of the Aranagar region and their families. Organized in groups, the women receive training and small loans to establish micro-enterprises or pursue other income-generating investments in the agricultural sector. Pumping wells and latrines are constructed. Traditional irrigation techniques are field-tested. Furthermore, trees are planted and demonstration fields are prepared.

5. “Integrated Development Project for the Improvement of Means of Existence”

This project cares for 1,000 exceptionally poor families and trains them individually to systematically realise potential chances of development. Families receive need-based consulting and training to improve their income, health and educational situation. This includes improvement and diversification of their agricultural production. Together, these measures are also aimed at improving the social status of women.

Project Area: 25 villages in the Ishania, Nafanagar and Mushidhat municipalities, Dinajpur district (project center in Bakultala)

6./7. “Modern Education and Training Institute” (METI):

This schooling project in Rudrapur with branch offices in Dinajpur and Ghoraghat attempts to facilitate access to an overall high-quality education for the rural population. 260 children and adolescents receive an eight-year education. In addition, technical training in the fields of tailoring, carpentry as well as bamboo and mudbrick building is provided. The program’s goal is to train responsible and creative individuals who contribute to the enhancement and development of the rural area.

8. Training electricians in Rudrapur:

This project serves to improve power supply in rural areas of the Dinajpur district. 20 unemployed adolescents receive vocational training. In 2007, construction of the training workshop and schooling started. Participants are also trained in the construction of solar plants.
